As many of you have already noticed, there is an algae bloom on Tuxedo Lake. On Monday, May 21st, 2012, the Village Board authorized Allied Biological to submit paper work to the DEC for authorization to apply copper sulphate to Tuxedo Lake. The Village received permission today, and will be applying copper sulphate on Friday, May 25th, 2012. It is anticipated that the copper sulphate application will quickly dissipate the algae bloom, but there are no absolute guarantees. At this time, the Village does not believe there is a connection between the algae bloom and the mulch pile.
Historically, the Village applied copper sulphate to Tuxedo Lake twice a year, but discontinued the practice in 2009. Going forward, Allied Biological will monitor Tuxedo Lake and apply copper sulphate when needed using methods that are more up to date than previously used. The contract with Allied Biological ensures that the Village will now have constant monitoring of Tuxedo Lake to help minimize any future algae blooms.
